Rant: The "backlash comp" trick I thought was BS actually works

I used to think DRO backlash comp was just a crutch for worn machines. But after 3 months running a 2006 Haas VF-3 in Portland, I checked it on a bore test and got 0.0004" repeatability. Idk if it's the ball screw wear or what, but now I trust it. Anyone else rely on that feature or still do the old indicator dance?

Man that's good to hear. I've been on the fence about it myself for a while. Ran a old Fadal for years and always did the indicator dance out of habit. Finally tried comp on a Makino we got last spring and it held up way better than I thought it would. Still catch myself double checking with the indicator sometimes though. Old habits die hard, but it sounds like you found something that works for your setup. That 0.0004 is solid.
