Shoutout to the guy in Wichita who showed me why my finish cuts kept chattering
I was running a batch of 4140 shafts on a tired lathe two weeks ago and every finish pass came out with this nasty chatter about 1.5 inches from the chuck. A retired toolmaker named Gus was visiting the shop and instead of laughing at me he grabbed a dial indicator and walked me through checking my tailstock alignment, which was off by 0.004. He also showed me that my tool was hanging out 3/4 of an inch too far and said "the machine tells you what it wants if you take the time to look." I shortened the holder, realigned the tailstock, dropped my feed to 0.006 per rev, and the chatter vanished on the very next part. That one 20 minute lesson saved me scrapping 11 more shafts that afternoon. Curious if you guys keep a dial indicator on the bench for quick alignment checks, or do you just wait until the finish tells you something is wrong?
