Talked to a guy who runs a shop in Boise and he said something about tool life that stuck with me.

He told me he tracks his carbide end mills by the number of parts, not just hours, and it changed how he sets his feeds. Said he got 30% more parts from a batch by slowing down just a bit. Do you guys track tool wear by parts made or just run time?

Oh for sure, parts is the only way to go. I mean, run time doesn't tell you if you're actually making anything.

Track by parts, but my tools mostly track my mistakes.

Always went by hours, but parts makes way more sense.
