That comment about tool offsets in the break room finally clicked for me
I was on my second cup of coffee during a 10 minute break last Tuesday and one of the older guys, Dave from the afternoon shift, was complaining about a part that kept coming out 0.003 off. Someone told him to stop chasing the wear number and just reset his tool offset from the measured value, not the theoretical one. I've been doing this for 4 years now and I always just typed in what the book said. I went back to my machine, tried it on a run of 40 parts, and my scrap count dropped from 7 to 1. It sounds stupid simple but I never paid attention to how the control stores the actual wear. I'm curious if anyone else learned little stuff like that just from overhearing shop talk, or do you mostly figure it out the hard way?
