That day in Detroit when the old horizontal mill threw a part across the shop

I was running an old Cincinnati horizontal at a shop near 8 Mile, and a clamp let go on a heavy steel block. After that crash I started checking every torque spec twice, even on setups that seem simple. Any of you guys have a close call that made you slow down?

Did your heart stop for a second or did I just lose my hearing?

Read an article about this exact thing. Sound waves from a speaker can actually mess with your inner ear for a split second. Makes you think you went deaf. Happens more with really loud bass. Your brain just kinda blanks out the noise for a moment. Then your hearing snaps back like nothing happened.

Oh man, YES. I've totally had that happen. I was at a small show a few years back standing way too close to the subwoofer during the opener. When the bass dropped, everything just went silent for like two full seconds. I could see people's mouths moving and my brain was just like "nope, we're done here." Scared the crap out of me. It came back with this weird ringing that faded after a minute. Definitely thought I broke my ears for good that night.
