The $12 feeler gauge set that saved my square shoulder insert setup

Last week I was fighting chatter on a 304 stainless part at our plant in Toledo. Spent two days messing with speeds, feeds, and a new holder before I remembered my old mentor used to shim inserts with feeler gauges. I grabbed a cheap $12 set from the tool truck, cut a 0.002 inch strip, and wedged it under the insert to correct a tiny height mismatch. Chatter gone, surface finish got way better, and I finished the whole batch of 40 pieces in one shift. The part prints called for a 32 rms finish and I was getting 60 before that. Has anyone else used shims for insert height or do you just trust the pocket? Curious if folks have a better trick for these cheap Chinese holders.

And it's funny how the same trick shows up everywhere, not just in machine shops. I've fixed a wobbly faucet handle with a sliver of soda can and leveled a table with a folded business card, all using that same "shim until it's right" logic. Seems like most cheap stuff just needs a tiny nudge to work, and a $12 tool that forces you to think about that is worth more than a $300 piece of gear that hides the problem.

Man, that takes me back. I did the exact same thing on a worn out Kennametal holder last year, except I used a 0.0015 strip from a cheap set I keep in my box. The pocket was so wallowed out that the insert would sit crooked no matter how tight I torqued the screw. Shoved that little shim in there and it cut true as an arrow. I've also used feeler gauges to check how much the insert moves under pressure, then shimmed accordingly. Some guys say just buy a good holder, but when you're running a prototype lot on a Friday afternoon, a $12 fix beats a $300 wait any day.
