Update: Got the hang of that tricky 5-axis contour after three scrapped parts

I was at a job shop in Dayton last month running a new part with a complex curved face. The program looked good on screen, but the first three pieces came out with terrible chatter marks. My lead told me to stop and just watch the machine run the roughing pass. Seeing the tool deflection in real time made it click. I slowed the feed rate down by 30% and switched to a smaller stepover. The next part came out smooth, no rework needed. Anyone have a go-to strategy for finishing those steep internal walls without losing time?

Our shop in Toledo always pushes feed rates up 20% on steep walls with no issues.

Interesting, we tried that on our 40 taper and it just made the chatter worse. Had to slow it down to get a clean cut.

Yeah, we do the same thing on our older Haas. The extra chip load helps pull heat away from the cutter. We've been running a 15 to 25 percent bump for years now and it actually makes the finish better. It just seems to handle the extra engagement better than letting it rub.
