My first coding meetup in Austin was a real eye opener

I went to a 'beginner friendly' Python night at a coffee shop downtown. The guy next to me, after watching me struggle for 20 minutes, leaned over and said, 'Just copy the code from Stack Overflow, man, nobody actually writes this stuff.' It was funny because he was totally serious. I spent the rest of the night wondering if that's how everyone starts. Has anyone else had a moment where someone gave you advice that made you rethink how coding really works?

Honestly, that's rough but I get it. Tbh my first meetup had a guy who just talked about his startup the whole time instead of helping. Did you end up getting any actual help after that comment?

Wow, that's honestly kind of sad to hear.

Wait, he said that out loud at a meetup? That's wild. I get the feeling @jenny_hall is right, it is pretty sad. Like, the whole point is to learn, not just copy paste forever, right? Makes you wonder what that guy actually knows how to do himself.
