TIL picking between Python and JavaScript as a first language comes down to what you want to build
When I started learning to code 4 months ago, I got stuck for a week trying to pick between Python and JavaScript. A developer I met at a meetup in Austin asked me one simple question: do you want to make websites or work with data? I picked JavaScript because I wanted to build things I could see in a browser right away. The first 2 weeks were rough since I kept forgetting semicolons, but by week 3 I had a small to-do list app running. Now I'm 4 months in and I still wonder if Python would have been easier for a total beginner like me. For those of you who started with one and switched to the other, was it worth it?
The first 2 weeks were rough since I kept forgetting semicolons" made me laugh because I did the exact same thing, except I also forgot how to close a curly brace about fifty times. Sticking with JavaScript was worth it for me since seeing stuff happen in the browser kept me from quitting out of boredom. If you made it to a working to-do app in 3 weeks, you already proved you can learn the hard parts.
