Update: paid $12 for a "learn Python in a weekend" ebook and actually finished it
I grabbed this cheap ebook on a whim back in March because I kept bouncing off free tutorials and figured $12 was low enough to risk on something dumb. Everyone in the reviews said it was too basic, so I almost skipped it, but the thing that got me was every chapter ends with one tiny project you have to type out yourself, no copy paste. I did a dice roller, a tip calculator for my buddy's food truck, and a little script that renames my photos by date. Took me way longer than a weekend, more like three weeks of 30 min before bed, but I actually shipped all of them. Turns out the parts people called filler, like the boring stuff on lists and loops, were the only reason the later chapters made sense to me. Now I keep wondering if I just got lucky with this one book or if beginner resources with tiny forced projects are always this much better. What was the cheapest thing you tried that actually stuck for you?

Same here, a $5 used copy of a beginner book with tiny practice bits at the end is the only one that ever stuck for me.
