I'm team manual espresso machine after pulling shots at a cafe last Saturday, but my friend swears by super-automatics for consistency

Does the ritual of hand-grinding and timing your shot actually make better espresso or are we just romanticizing the labor when a $700 machine could do it cleaner every time?

The ritual part matters but only up to a point. A $700 machine that nails the same shot every time is hard to beat for actual morning coffee when you're half asleep. Manual is fun for the weekend show-off stuff, but consistency wins for daily use.
