Milk thermometer died mid-pour, latte art went rogue

Last Sunday at my kitchen counter, my $8 thermometer gave up right after I steamed the milk, so I had to eyeball the temperature and swirl by feel... the rosetta came out looking like a squiggly lightning bolt and I actually loved it. Has anyone else had a gear failure turn into a happy accident with their pour?
