My French press exploded coffee everywhere this morning, here's what happened

I've been using the same 34 oz French press for like 4 years and this morning the whole thing just shattered while I was pressing down. The glass basically blew out sideways and sent hot coffee and grounds all over my counter, the floor, and my white shirt before I even had my eyes open. Turns out the carafe had a tiny hairline crack near the bottom that I never noticed because I always just rinsed it and put it in the drying rack. Now I'm looking at metal French presses but I'm worried they'll change the taste or keep the coffee too hot. Has anyone else had a glass press fail on them like that, and did switching to a steel one actually mess with the flavor at all?
