My grinder finally bit the dust after 4 years
I was making my morning pour over yesterday and my Baratza Encore just seized up with a loud grinding noise. Took it apart and the plastic gear inside was completely stripped. Anyone know a good hand grinder that can handle light roasts without taking forever?

Four years is pretty good for a $140 grinder though, people act like they should last forever. You sure you don't just need the $5 gear replacement kit?

Four years with a $140 grinder? Man, mine just gave up the ghost two weeks after the warranty expired. Classic timing, right? I swear these things have a built-in clock that goes off right when you're in the middle of cutting something important. And don't get me started on the "just buy the $5 gear kit" advice - like I'm gonna tear the whole thing apart and hope the gears line up on my first try. I'd probably end up with extra screws and a grinder that sounds like a dying blender.

Right? That warranty expiration timing is too precise for coincidence. I've had that same sad feeling when something dies right after the coverage ends. Fixing it yourself feels like a gamble too, and ending up with rattling death sounds isn't worth the headache.
