Rant: my $6 burr grinder lid popped off mid-grind and I spent 20 minutes finding beans under the fridge in my Denver apartment
Last Tuesday I was grinding 18 grams of a light roast for my morning pour over, and the lid on my cheap hand grinder gave out at full speed. Beans flew everywhere, I found 5 of them behind the fridge and the rest are probably still under the stove. My roommate walked in, saw me on my hands and knees with a flashlight, and just said 'again?' Does anyone have a hand grinder that doesn't explode on me?
Grabbed my chest reading that part about your roommate walking in and just saying "again?" like this is a normal Tuesday for you two. Five beans behind the fridge is wild, that means some of them really did clear some distance when that lid let go. In my experience those cheap hand grinders have lids that barely hold on, and once the threads wear down even a little it is game over. Your mileage may vary but I would check the threads on the top before you blame the grind speed. Take this with a grain of salt since I am rough on my gear, but a burr grinder in that price range is kind of a gamble on the lid staying put.
