That time I forgot the aeropress filter at a campsite in Shenandoah

I was out near the Hawksbill Mountain trailhead last Saturday. Got the water boiling, grounds measured out, reached for the filter pack and it wasn't in my bag. Must have left it on the kitchen counter. I ended up using a paper towel I cut into a circle with my pocket knife. It worked but the coffee had a weird linty taste and took like 3 minutes to drip through. Has anyone tried that paper towel hack and actually gotten it to work clean? I'm thinking about keeping a spare filter in my car now.

Why not just use the aeropress without a filter?

Wait, you just mean no filter at all? Like just grounds and water with nothing straining it? I mean isn't that just basically eating coffee grounds at that point or am I missing something.
