Vent: That guy at the cafe who told me my pour over method was 'wrong'

I was at this little coffee shop in Portland last Saturday, waiting for my drink, and this older guy walks up to the barista and starts talking about how the shop's pour over technique ruins the bloom phase. He then turned to me and said, 'You know, most home brewers do it all wrong too, they pour too fast.' I just nodded because honestly I was caught off guard. He went on for like five minutes about water temperature and grind size, all while my drink got cold. I've been doing pour overs at home for about two years with a basic Chemex and I've never had a bad cup. It just stuck with me how someone can be so sure their way is the only way. Has anyone else had a random stranger criticize how you make your coffee?

Totally get why that stuck with you, it's weird when someone just comes at you like that out of nowhere. Maybe he was trying to be helpful in his own awkward way, but telling someone their coffee making is wrong is kind of a buzzkill. You do you with that Chemex, two years of good cups says more than any random dude's lecture.

Honestly I used to be the same way, I thought any advice was just someone being helpful. But reading this made me realize how annoying it is when people critique stuff you've clearly got figured out. Two years of using something without complaining kind of proves you know what you're doing.

Who hasn't had some random guy try to "fix" something you're already doing perfectly?
