Why does no one mention how much water temp changes after the first pour?
I noticed my morning brew went from bitter to smooth after I started preheating my mug and carafe for 30 seconds, basically keeping the water at 205 instead of dropping to 190. Has anyone else dialed in their routine around heat loss like this?

That "temp drop after first pour" thing is real. It's like how your car heater works way better once the engine is already warm, time and energy are always lost on that initial chill.

Preheating the mug with hot water first fixed that for me, @drewgonzalez.

Completely changed my mind on this one, @jenny_hall. I used to just pour and hope for the best, thinking the mug would catch up eventually. Then I tried preheating a ceramic mug with hot water from the tap for a minute before adding my coffee. The difference was night and day, the first sip was actually hot instead of lukewarm disappointment. It makes total sense when you think about it, the mug acts like a heat sink just like Drew said about the car engine analogy. Now I never skip that step, it adds maybe 60 seconds but saves a whole cup.
