The espresso machine at my local shop in Portland broke mid-pull on Tuesday. Died right there.

I was standing there waiting for my usual cortado and the machine just hissed loud then went silent. Barista tried to restart it three times. Nothing. They had to refund everyone in line and the place went from busy to empty in like five minutes. I ended up walking two blocks to another shop and the coffee was just not the same. Has anyone else had a shop lose their main machine and seen the vibe just completely shift?

Did the barista at least offer you a free drink next time or was it just 'sorry, machines dead'? Reminds me of the time our old toaster at home finally gave up mid-bagel, and I ended up eating sad untoasted bread for a week because I couldn't find a good replacement.

Grabbed a filter brew instead and it actually hit the spot for me.

Totally agree, sometimes the simplest stuff just works. I was at a cafe last week and had the same thing, just a plain filter coffee, no fancy latte or anything, and it was exactly what I needed. Funny how that happens sometimes.
