Appreciation post: Finding calm in my weekly comic read through a rough patch

I was feeling really low after some personal stuff happened. One evening, I just grabbed a Batman graphic novel off my shelf. Getting lost in Gotham City for a few hours actually made my anxiety fade. It hit me that this was a real escape valve I had been ignoring. Now, I make it a point to read comics for at least an hour every Sunday. I also chat about them with friends online, which adds a social piece. This simple fan habit has become my go to for keeping my head clear.

Totally get that feeling of needing an escape hatch when things pile up. For me it was Daredevil comics, the old Frank Miller stuff, where just the weight of the book in my hands helped shut out the noise. Something about turning actual pages, not tapping a screen, makes my brain finally slow down and just follow the story. It creates this little bubble where the outside world can't get in for a while, which is honestly the whole point.

Does holding the actual paper book make it feel more like an escape than reading on a screen would?

How do you decide which comic to grab when things get heavy? I totally get using stories to zone out, since following a good arc lets my own worries fade into the background for a while. Really cool that you've built a habit that gives you that space.
