Appreciation post: my local comic guy's pull list tip saved my budget
I have been collecting comics for about 4 years and I kept buying way too many titles every month. Last summer I was dropping close to $60 a month at my shop in Akron and half the books just sat in a box. Then the owner, Dale, told me to try something simple: only stay on a book for 3 issues, and if I am not hooked by then, drop it. Sounds obvious but I never did it. I started a little notebook with each title and a yes or no next to issue 3, and after 2 rounds I cut my list from 14 books down to 6. My monthly haul went from around $60 to $22 and I actually read everything now instead of stacking it. It also made me way more excited for the books I do keep, like I am not just going through the motions. Has anyone else tried a hard cutoff like this, and did it change what you pull?
Congrats on discovering the ancient secret of "stop buying stuff you don't read," truly groundbreaking wisdom from Dale. Next he'll tell you water is wet and you should pull your pants up before leaving the house. Kidding aside, the 3 issue rule is solid and it's wild how many people never do the math on their pull list until they're buried in floppies they never open. I did a version of this a couple years back and dumped like 8 titles in one shot, and my wallet has been thanking me ever since. The part about actually being excited for the books you keep is the real win, because a stack of unread comics just turns into guilt with a cover price. Six books you love beats fourteen you're just checking off a list, no contest.
