Hot take: letting a 12 year old pick my pull list actually worked out
I let my nephew pick five random issues at the shop last Saturday and ended up with a surprisingly good mix. Has anyone else tried handing over control to a kid just to see what happens?

Man kids have zero filter when it comes to picking covers they like, it's actually refreshing. They don't care about continuity or writer runs or any of that stuff we overthink. Pretty sure letting a 12 year old loose in a shop gets you way more fun picks than reading ten reviews online.

Is it just me or does this apply to way more than just comics though? I noticed the same thing when my niece picked out a movie for us once. Went straight for the cover with the brightest colors and a dog on it, ended up being some random indie film from 1995 that had no right being that good. Meanwhile I spent 20 minutes reading reviews and picked something that turned out to be a total slog. Kids have this way of cutting through all the marketing noise and just grabbing what actually catches their eye. I think there's something to be said for trusting that instinct sometimes, even if it means you end up with a dud here and there.

$11.72 is what my last "critically acclaimed" pull cost me and it was boring as hell lol. I get the idea of handing over control but I'd rather a kid pick my dinner than my comics honestly. Covers can be total bait - I've grabbed stuff that looked sick on the shelf and was unreadable inside. Kids have no sense of what makes a good story yet, they just like the shiny thing.
