My comic book group roasted me for saying variant covers are a waste. I just want to read the story.

Wow, that take is ice cold. Variant covers are the whole point for some of us. The art is its own story. You're just buying a boring pamphlet otherwise. It shows which artists you support, makes a collection unique. If you only care about words, maybe just get the digital version.

Saw my friend spend his rent money on a full set of variant covers last year. He always talked like @jaken28, saying the art was the real prize and the stories didn't matter. Then his car broke down and he tried to sell them fast to pay for repairs. Guess what, the shop only offered him pocket change for the whole box. Now he reads digital and calls variant covers a tax on people who care too much about shelves.

Jaken28 has a point about supporting artists, but man, it's a slippery slope. I bought a cool foil cover once because the art was amazing, but the story inside was total garbage. Now it just sits there, a shiny reminder I paid extra for a bad time. It's like getting a fancy wrapper on a stale sandwich. Gotta admit, sometimes the boring pamphlet has the better meal.
