My comic shop guy in Phoenix called me out for only buying number one issues

For years, I only picked up new number one issues, thinking I was getting in on the ground floor. Last month, the owner at my local shop saw my pile and asked why I skipped the rest of the story. He showed me a run of 'Daredevil' where the best stuff happened after issue five. I felt pretty silly for missing so many good books just to have a bunch of first issues. Anyone else get stuck on a collecting habit that made you miss the actual stories?

Oh man, this is such a real thing. I see it everywhere, not just comics. People get hooked on the idea of the "start" of something, like a new hobby or diet, and they collect all the gear or day-one plans but never actually get into the real, good, messy middle part where you actually get better at it. It's like wanting the trophy without playing the game. Your comic guy did you a solid, honestly.

Ugh, been there. @patricialee is right, it's about the game not the trophy. Grab a full arc of something cheap next time, you'll see the difference.

My local shop did that for me too, and @patricialee nailed it, the middle issues are where the story gets good.
