That time I dropped $80 on a 'rare' variant cover that was actually a bootleg

I saw this sweet Spider-Man variant at a con in Denver last month, seller said it was a limited print run from 2019. Paid $80 for it and felt like a king. Got home and noticed the colors were super off compared to my other issues, like the reds were muddy. Turns out the barcode on the back didn't match any official listing when I looked it up. Has anyone else gotten fooled by fake variants at shows?

Man, did you post this just to make me feel better about getting burned last year? I grabbed what I thought was a sweet Batman variant from a flea market vendor, paid $50, and the cover art was all pixelated when I got it in good light. It stings at first but honestly if the art looks cool on my shelf, who really cares if it's legit or not?

Is it really that big of a deal though? You still got a cool looking Spider-Man book for your shelf, even if it's not the real deal. I'd rather pay $80 for a fun fake than drop that on a real slab that just sits in a plastic box.
