Appreciation post: Watching a harbor crane work in Seattle made me think about lift bags
I was down at the Port of Seattle last week and saw a crane moving a huge shipping container. The way the operator had to account for the swing and the water current was just like managing a lift bag on a tricky salvage job. Ever notice how many surface skills translate directly to topside machinery?

Oh man, that's a great point. It's wild how often you see the same basic physics at play in totally different places. I see it with knots and rigging too, like how a trucker securing a load uses the same tension principles as setting up a tarp line. Makes you realize a lot of jobs are just applied common sense with different tools.

Read an article once about how the physics of a simple pulley system shows up in everything from old sailing ships to modern rock climbing gear. It's the same handful of rules dressed up in different ways.

Wait, you guys are doing salvage jobs with lift bags? That's some next level stuff... I just figured that was for like, professional recovery crews. I guess it makes sense though, if you know the physics you know the physics. Still blows my mind a little thinking about someone casually comparing harbor cranes to their weekend hobby.
