Back in the day, dropping $600 on a good dive knife felt like a waste, but mine cut me free from a ghost net off the Keys.

Has anyone else had a piece of gear that seemed pricey but ended up being a total lifesaver?

Man, that's it exactly. You see this all the time with tools and safety gear. People balk at the cost until the one time it makes all the difference. It's not an expense, it's just paying up front.

Ever think the real cost is not buying it when you should have?

What about gear that saves you from YOURSELF? I bought a stupidly expensive climbing helmet that felt like overkill. Then I took a bad fall and a rock the size of a softball hit me right in the head. Walked away with just a headache. That price tag felt REAL different after that, let me tell you. It wasn't about the wild outdoors trying to get me, it was about my own dumb mistake. Sometimes the best gear just lets you survive your own bad day.
