Did a harbor inspection in San Diego last month and noticed someone left a lift bag tied off to a mooring buoy overnight

Is that something you guys have dealt with before, or was it just a one-off thing with a diver forgetting their gear?

Wait, am I reading this right, someone actually tied a lift bag off overnight next to the Coast Guard station? That seems like a dangerous shortcut even if claire_hart53 has a point about deep wreck diving. You'd think anyone with that kind of gear would be careful enough to not leave a hazard floating around in a busy harbor.

The buoy number was 17 in the south end of the bay, right near the Coast Guard station. My thought is that might actually be a deliberate marker left by someone doing a decompression stop overnight on a deep wreck. San Diego has some spots like the Ruby E that drop past 200 feet, and if a diver was planning a long deco hang, they'd tie off a lift bag to mark their position and keep from drifting into the shipping channel. Not saying it's smart, but it's a different way to look at it than just forgetting gear. Harbor patrol probably cut it loose the next morning anyway.

Wait, someone actually left a lift bag tied off overnight? That's wild, man. I've seen divers forget fins or a mask but a whole lift bag with the potential to snag a boat's prop or mess with the mooring line? That's asking for trouble. If I was that diver, I'd be kicking myself for being so careless, especially near a busy harbor like San Diego where things can go south real quick.
