Just realized my old way of cleaning my Kirby helmet comms was making things worse.
For about six months I was getting constant static and dropouts on every dive in the Gulf. I was wiping the mic and speaker ports with a shop rag after each job. Switched to using canned air and a soft brush, and the comms have been crystal clear for the last three weeks straight. What's your go-to method for keeping comms clean without damaging the seals?

Sounds like you just got lucky with the weather. My shop rag method works fine, never had a problem. Canned air just blows the grit deeper into the seals anyway.

Guess your shop rag is the official tool of the "never had a problem" club. Maybe the grit just politely moves aside for you? My luck must have been using the same weather app as all the people who say canned air works.

Yeah, that canned air thing is a total gamble. Sometimes it works fine, other times it just shoves the problem somewhere you can't see it. Miles is right about the grit getting pushed deeper, seen that happen. Your luck with the weather app line is pretty spot on, honestly.
