My dive partner in Seattle called my pre-dive gear check 'rushed' after I missed a worn o-ring on my comms mask.

Yeah, a worn o-ring is exactly the kind of thing you miss when you rush. I'm totally with @gavinwells on the printed checklist. I actually use a bright orange one and physically touch each piece of gear as I say it out loud. It feels silly but it makes you actually see the gear, not just glance at it.

Been there. I started using a printed checklist and going point by point, even when I'm in a hurry. It forces you to slow down and actually look at each piece.
