Realized too late that my comms cable was frayed during a salvage job (you can't shout through water, so check your gear twice)

The Buddy System exists for a reason. Gear can fail no matter how many times you check it. Another set of eyes underwater is your real backup.

DAMN right, I almost looped my own reg hose once doing the same exact thing.

Yeah, that "another set of eyes" thing is key. Checking your own gear twice is good, but you get blind to your own setup. A good buddy will run their hand along your cable while you're kitting up, feeling for that slight bump or stiffness you might miss. They'll spot the weak point at the connector you've plugged and unplugged a hundred times. Solo checks fail because you're just going through the motions on your own stuff.

You actually didn't spot that fray until you were already on the job? @parker183 has a point about getting a buddy to feel for those issues you might overlook. Makes the whole buddy system thing seem less like a rule and more like a lifesaver.
