That one harbor master who waved me off the dock changed my whole approach
Old guy named Sal down in Port of Los Angeles saw me rushing my pre-dive checks on a 30-foot hull inspection and just shook his head. He said "slow is smooth, smooth is fast" and it stuck with me ever since. Anybody else have a random person on a dock give you advice that actually worked?

That's exactly what happened with me and an old crab fisherman named Hank down in Newport. He watched me fumble with a fender line for way too long and just said "tie it like you mean it, not like you're scared of it.

Oh man that is such GREAT advice. I had a guy named Dave on a pier in San Diego tell me to "stop trying to be a hero with the knots and just use a basic cleat hitch" after watching me struggle for like five minutes. He was right. I was way overthinking it and making everything harder than it needed to be. It's funny how the simplest stuff from a random stranger can just click and stick with you forever.
