Bus route or bike lane? My 6 month experiment split my week in half
For 6 months I did Mondays and Tuesdays on the 42 bus downtown, then Wednesdays through Fridays on my hybrid bike. The bus cost $2.75 each way but added 25 minutes of waiting, while biking saved me $34 a month but left me sweating through my work shirt. One Tuesday the bus broke down and I sat for 40 minutes, but on Thursday a driver almost clipped me turning right on 5th Ave. I switched to all biking after that near miss, but now I'm wondering if the savings are worth the risk. Has anyone else split their commute between two options and had a clear winner? What made you finally pick one over the other?

...okay so I tried something kinda similar where I did bus one week and bike the next, and honestly the bus just felt like a gamble every single time. One morning I watched three busses roll past me full and I almost cried in my work pants, but then biking made me show up looking like I ran a marathon in a trash bag. I finally picked mostly biking because I can control my own fate even if it means I smell like a gym locker by 9am. The near miss thing is real though, I had a driver honk at me for existing and that's when I knew I'd rather be late than dead.
