Dropped $80 on a train pass I never used

Bought a monthly commuter pass for the LIRR back in March, thinking I'd ride into the city every day. Ended up working remote way more than I planned and only used it 4 times total. That's like $20 per ride, which is basically throwing cash out the window. Anyone else buy something commute-related that totally flopped?

Throwing cash out the window" pretty much sums it up, man. That's a rough one. Did you buy it through the MTA app or at the station? Just wondering because I know some passes are refundable if you cancel early enough, but it might be too late now.

Actually wait, that's not exactly right. The MTA app ones aren't really refundable once you activate them, which happens right when you buy, so you're stuck. But the physical cards from the station vending machines are a little different. You can get a refund on those if you mail them in within 30 days, but you lose the $1 fee. Not saying it's a great deal or anything just that there's a tiny loophole if you ever buy one and change your mind quick enough. Still stings either way, I feel you on that.
