Hit 1,000 escalator rides at my subway stop this year and it made me weirdly proud
I walk through the same station in Chicago every morning and there's this one escalator that's been out for repairs since March, so I started counting the working one. Today my phone counter hit 1,000 rides on that same set of steps going up from the platform. Sounds dumb but it took me 10 months of the same 7:42am train to get there, rain or shine, and I never missed a single day. The station has 4 escalators and 3 of them break constantly, which is why I started counting in the first place, mostly out of annoyance. Has anyone else kept a dumb count like this just to survive the same boring ride every day?
Started doing the exact same thing back when I lived in Boston, except mine was counting the days my bus showed up on time (spoiler: it was not often). My buddy Dan took it way further though. He rode the same L train every day for two years and kept a running list of every weird thing he saw on it, like a guy eating a full bowl of cereal and a woman who brought her parrot on board. He hit 500 entries and printed the whole list out like it was some kind of trophy. His girlfriend thought he was nuts but honestly it got him through the same boring commute without losing his mind. There's something about counting the small stuff that makes a boring routine feel like you're actually doing something.
