Oh, I totally get what you're saying, but this actually changed my mind. I used to be just like you - always rushing for the express, thinking locals were a waste of time. Then one morning I was running late and just took the first train that came. That hour was the most peaceful commute I'd had in months. Sure it takes longer, but once you account for the extra time, you just settle in. The stops coming and going actually make it less crowded after a few stations, and the rocking motion combined with a good book really calms you down. I actually plan for it now on days when I know I need to decompress before work.

Wait, you're saying people actually take the LOCAL train on purpose? I always thought locals were just the slow torture you had to endure if you missed the express. Like who wakes up and says "I really want to add 15 extra stops to my commute today so I can read my book in peace"? I'd be way too stressed about getting to work late to enjoy any reading. Plus those local cars are usually more crowded with people getting on and off every two blocks, not exactly quiet reading time.

My buddy Jake actually had the opposite experience. He tried the local once because he was stressed about a presentation and figured he'd use the time to go over his notes, but he just got more anxious watching all the express trains zoom past. He said he spent the whole trip staring at the clock and ended up more worked up than when he started. I guess it depends on whether you can actually shut off the timer in your head.
