Remember when train cars had actual bench seats?
Was on the 7:15 express last Tuesday. Saw a guy sprawled across three plastic bucket seats. Made me think. Three years ago those trains had those long brown bench seats. You could fit five people easy. Now everyone's hunched into their own little pod. I miss the old metal grab bars too. These new rubber coated ones just feel weird. Anyone else miss the pre-reno trains?

They swapped worn-in character for sterile plastic and called it an upgrade.

Read something in the transit blog last month about how the new seats were designed to stop people from lying down. Seems like they traded comfort for control. The old bench seats weren't perfect but at least you didn't feel like you were in a dentist chair. Did the new grab bars actually stop anyone from slipping or was that just another fix for a problem nobody had?

The new layout actually works way better for rush hour crowds though, no more awkward shuffling past sleepers.
