Thought the guy on the 7:15 bus was faking his guitar thing, then he actually pulled it off
So there is this older dude who gets on the 7:15 bus at Halsted every morning with a beat up acoustic and no case, and for like 2 months I figured he was just some guy who never learned a real song. Last Tuesday he started playing while we were stuck at the light on Fullerton and this whole group of people went quiet. He did a full version of a Bill Withers tune, maybe 3 minutes, and when he finished a woman in scrubs clapped and he just nodded like it was nothing. I gave him a dollar and felt kind of dumb about it after. Does anyone else have a regular on their route who surprised them like that?

Man, come on. Two months of the same dude plinking away and you just now decided he was legit? That says more about you than him. Half the people on any bus look sketchy until they open their mouth or play a note, and writing somebody off for weeks before giving them a chance is exactly the problem. A dollar after the fact is almost worse than nothing because it's like you're paying him back for your own bad guess, not for the music. Bill Withers didn't get famous by waiting for strangers to approve of him first, and this guy clearly didn't either. Next time trust your ears before you trust your first look at somebody, because the quiet ones usually have the most to say.
