Watch out for the black ice patch on the 6th St bridge ramp, ate it hard on my bike last Tuesday
Hit a patch of black ice on the bridge ramp around 7:40am last Tuesday and went down hard, cracked my helmet and skinned my whole left side. Walked the bike the rest of the way to the office and now I take the long way through the park even though it adds 8 minutes. Anyone else found a safer winter route around downtown, or am I stuck with the detour until April?
Cracked your helmet is the real badge of honor here, and my own dumb version of that is that I wiped out on that same ramp two winters ago and my first thought was whether anyone saw me. If you want a safer route, cutting over by the park and then up the side streets past the library keeps you off the ramps and bridges almost the whole way, which is worth the extra minutes. The ice on those ramps sticks around until the salt trucks finally show up, so your detour is honestly the smart call.
