Had a weird boot loop on a Dell Optiplex that stumped me for two days

The machine would power on, show the Dell logo, then restart over and over. I tried swapping the RAM, the drive, even the power supply. Out of ideas, I pulled the CMOS battery for a full five minutes and cleared the BIOS with the jumper. When it came back up, it posted just fine. Has anyone else seen a corrupted BIOS cause a boot loop like that on these models?

Clearing the BIOS with the jumper should have been enough. Pulling the CMOS battery for five minutes on top of that is just doing the same thing twice. The jumper clears the settings by shorting the pins, which is the real fix. The battery pull probably didn't add anything extra for that specific problem.

Yeah, a corrupted BIOS sounds pretty serious. Wesley_adams has a point though, the jumper should do the same thing as pulling the battery. Maybe it was just a weird glitch that needed the extra time to clear out.

Actually, the jumper clears the settings but the battery pull can drain residual power from caps... that extra five minutes can matter for a deep reset, @anthony129.
