I was testing power supplies wrong for years
I'd always just jump the green wire to ground on the 24-pin connector to see if the fan spun. A tech in Kansas City pointed out that doesn't test the load capacity, which explains why a few 'good' units I'd installed later failed under stress. What's your go-to method for a quick but reliable bench test?

My old boss in Detroit swore by a cheap multimeter load tester... it catches more than the paperclip trick.

Yeah, that paperclip trick is way too basic. I use a proper load tester like @kaih36 mentioned, it actually stresses the rails.
