Just realized I've been blaming the wrong part for 3 weeks on a return ticket
Had a Dell OptiPlex 7040 come back to the bench in Dearborn twice because it kept shutting off under load, and I swapped the PSU twice before I thought to check the thermal paste. Turns out the original paste was dried to a chalky crust and the thing was hitting 100C in 4 minutes of Prime95. So here's the debate: do you always repaste every refurb before it goes out the door, or only when it misbehaves? Half my shop says it's wasted labor, the other half says it's the only way to stop comeback tickets. Curious where you all land on this one.
Man, this is the same thing as changing your oil at 3,000 miles when the manual says 7,500. Half the folks swear by it, the other half say you're burning money, and both sides have a story that proves their point. For a refurb going out to a customer, I'd repaste every time, because a ten minute job and a few cents of paste beats eating a return ticket and losing the sale.
