Old mentor laughed at my thermal paste method, then showed me why

Back in 2018 my first shop boss told me I was using way too much paste on laptop CPUs. I thought a big pea was fine, but he made me scrape it off and use about half that amount on a Dell Inspiron 15. Got 10 degrees cooler on the stress test, and he was right that excess paste just bleeds out the edges. Anyone else get taught this the hard way or am I alone on the over-appliers train?
