Overheard a client say 'just run it overnight' about a failing drive
They were trying to copy data off a drive that was clicking, and thought leaving it on would help. That drive was completely dead by morning, lost everything. Anyone else have clients who think more time fixes hardware problems?

Sometimes letting it rest can actually help a drive recover enough to copy data.

Oh sure, let it rest, like it's a tired toddler and not a piece of hardware with literal physical damage. Next you'll be telling me to sing it a lullaby. That clicking sound is basically the drive screaming for a doctor, not asking for a nap. Heard too many horror stories of people waking up to a completely dead drive after trying that move. Gotta grab the data while the grabbing's good, even if it's scary.

That "just run it overnight" mindset is so painful to see. I've had that exact thing happen, where the extra stress from letting it try to work just finishes the drive off for good. It's a total gut punch when they lose everything by morning. You really have to get the data off as fast as possible when you hear those clicks, not give it more time to fail. Solidarity, that's a rough situation for everyone involved.
