Pro tip: don't ignore the power supply whine on an old Dell Optiplex 7010

I had a customer's office PC start making this high pitched noise from the back last Tuesday. I told them it was just coil whine and nothing to worry about, figured it would run fine for another year or two. Three days later the power supply completely died and took the motherboard with it. Have any of you dealt with that kind of sudden failure from something that seemed minor at first?

Had a 7010 in a small print shop do the exact same thing, coil whine turned into a dead board three days later. Those older Dell PSUs are notorious for taking out the whole system when they finally blow.

Have you seen the Gamers Nexus video where they took apart a bunch of old Dell PSUs and found caps that were literally bulging and leaking? I saw that a few months back and it changed my whole approach to those machines. Once I hear any whine or even a weird fan sound on a 7010 now I just swap the whole power supply out instead of waiting. Saved me a couple times already from exactly what happened to you.
