You might want to double check the thickness on those pads. Laptops have much tighter tolerances than desktops and too thick of a pad can actually lift the heatsink off the die... which makes your temps way worse instead of better. Thermal paste is usually safer for laptops unless you really know the exact gap measurements. I've seen people do this swap and end up with hotter temps because they guessed the thickness.

What kind of temps were you seeing before you swapped to the pads? I'm curious if you actually measured the gap with something like a caliper or just went with the 6mm guess... because phoenixb34 is right, that's way too thick for most laptop dies and could be why things got worse instead of better. Thermal paste usually wins in laptops for a reason, the clearance is just too tight to mess around with guessing pad thickness. Did you notice any uneven pressure marks on the heatsink when you pulled it off to check?
