That weird power issue on a Dell OptiPlex 3080 took me 4 hours to figure out

Just a heads up for anyone working on the newer small form factor OptiPlexes. Had one come in from a local clinic that would power on for exactly 3 seconds then shut off, no beeps, no display. I went through the whole checklist: swapped RAM, pulled the CMOS battery, tested the power supply with a multimeter (it read fine), even reseated the CPU. Nothing worked. I was about to declare a dead motherboard when I finally noticed the tiny diagnostic LEDs on the board itself. The 'CPU' light would flash once during that 3-second window. Turns out the heatsink mounting bracket had a hairline crack you could barely see, causing imperfect contact and an instant thermal shutdown. A $5 part from eBay and 10 minutes to swap it fixed everything. Has anyone else run into this specific failure on these models? I'm wondering if it's a common weak point.

Oh man, those tiny brackets are the WORST. I keep a few of the universal ones in my kit now because of that exact crack. Saves so much time.

Seriously? It's just a tiny bracket. How much time are you really saving with a universal one? Seems like making a big deal over nothing.

Honestly, that bit about the universal brackets saving time is spot on. I had the same three second shutdown on one last month and it drove me crazy. Tbh, after finding that cracked bracket, I just did what @the_jessica might call making a big deal over nothing and used a universal one from my bench drawer. It got the system back up same day instead of waiting for the exact part. Ngl, it's a dumb little flaw but those universal clips are a total lifesaver.
