Didn't know concrete has an expiration date until last week

I was on a job in Phoenix last Wednesday, mixing up some sacks from my truck bed. Grabbed a bag that felt kinda heavy and clumpy. Checked the date on it - was from 2019. Looked it up on my phone right there. Turns out cement actually goes bad after about 3 months if it's not stored dry. I had 8 bags that were all rock solid. Had to chunk them all in the dumpster. Cost me about $60 in wasted material. I knew concrete sets quick, but I never thought about the dry mix going bad. Anyone else ever get burned by old bags from the hardware store?

Gotta disagree with you here. I've used cement bags that were over a year old and they were totally fine as long as they were stored inside and stayed dry. It's not the age that ruins them, it's moisture getting into the bags.

Yeah moisture is the real killer. I keep mine in the basement on pallets, stays good for years. Toss it if it feels hard or lumpy though.
