Had a contractor chew me out over my broom finish on a driveway last spring

He told me I was dragging the broom in straight lines instead of arcs and it was trapping water, so now I arc all my finishes even though it takes twice as long.

Man, I used to think arcs were just for looks but that water pooling argument totally changed my mind.

Feel you on that, Terry. I used to roll my eyes at people getting deep about drainage slopes, but seeing how fast a little standing water can wreck a flat surface over time changed my tune. It's one of those things you don't notice until you actually have to deal with the mess.

The drainage slope on my patio is only about 1/8 inch per foot and I haven't seen any pooling in 6 years. @terryw67 I think people get too worked up about water pooling on flat roof arcs. Most modern roofing materials are waterproof anyway, so a little standing water isn't going to hurt anything. Unless you're dealing with a serious design flaw where water sits for days at a time, it's probably fine. I'd worry more about proper flashing and sealant than the exact angle of an arc.
