Pro tip: that week in July when the heat turned my finish set too fast and I ate 3 slabs of cuss
Last July in Amarillo we poured 42 yards on a Tuesday with the mix at a 5 inch slump and the finish started setting on us inside 20 minutes of the last pass. I had two guys floating behind the screed and by the time we got to the second slab, the first one was already too stiff to trowel clean and I had to hit it with a retarder and a lot of praying. We lost 3 slabs of finish that day because nobody sprayed down the subgrade and the trucks sat in line for over an hour, so the mix was already cooking when it hit the chute. Honest lesson: on anything over 95 degrees, I'm adding an hour to the schedule, wetting the base the night before, and keeping a spray bottle and a bucket of water within arm's reach of every finisher. Has anyone had luck with ice in the mix on days like that, or does it just drag the set and leave you skating the whole pour?
